Greater capacity demands in the access network—whether from consumer broadband, enterprise access services, or fixed and mobile 5G—have implications for the aggregation and transport network that connects access to the core network. Often referred to as the “middle mile” because of its intermediate location, fiber optic infrastructure is an essential component of this segment. Recognizing its importance, the U.S. government has allocated $1 billion in middle mile subsidies as part of the BEAD program. But middle mile networks are needed well beyond the rural and underserved areas targeted by BEAD. This session will look at how cable’s’ middle mile infrastructure must evolve to serve next-gen access networks, including DOCSIS 4.0, PON, fixed wireless access (FWA) and mobile 5G-Advanced.
